Bad Bad News …Economy Edition

http://www.noquarterusa.net/blog/67939/more-terrific-economic-news/#more-67939

Here is the key quote:

“None of this is good news for the United States or our economy over the next year.  I will repeat what I have written before–this news is not a cause for celebration.  It is a simple reminder that Obama has been asleep rather than do anything of substance to boost our domestic economy.  He is in over his head and more bad news is likely in the coming months.

UPDATE–This jobs report is disastrous.  It is more than 50% less than what is needed just to keep pace with population growth.  If this was happening only here then the cause for alarm would not be as great.  But most of the world’s big economies are moving downward.  Obama will not do what needs to be done because those steps, such as reducing government regulations and expanding oil and gas exploration, run counter to his ideology.  Time for Barry the Chooming Pothead to go back to Chicago.”

I Find This A Little Bit Funny…But Sad…

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100161868/official-the-more-scientifically-illiterate-you-are-the-more-you-believe-in-climate-change/

It is funny, because the Law of Unintended Consequences took a hand in the study. But it is not funny for three reasons:

- It  helps explain the rabidity of the AGW position and the ferocity of the exponents and their language. The less they actually know the louder and angrier they are.

- The poblem carries over into a lot of other fields. I am sure you would find the loudest supporters of the current economic “policies” know least about economics.

- The response was not a call for more education. True education can create lots of sceptics. The call was for more spin and indoctrination.

Funny, but not so funny.

Another Prediciton That President Obama Will Lose In November

http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/05/obama_will_not_win_re-election.html

Karl Rove made a similar prediction in January based on his belief that the president has lost too much ground with independents and other key voter blocs he needs to win. This analysis is more detailed.

Once again, I hope we elect Mitt Romney president. But the mere election of a Republican will not solve our problems until and unless we get serious about facing the problems in front of us in an honest manner.

Amelia Earhart’s Anti-Freckle Cream Jar?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/47623025/ns/technology_and_science-science/t/amelia-earharts-anti-freckle-cream-jar-possibly-found/

UPDATE

I love archaeology and it often aids in historical research, but I feel there is some serious stretching going on here.

The TIGHAR people are relying on some pretty sketchy stuff, most of it  is, to be honest, hearsay stuff about an alleged castaway on what was then Gardner’s Island and the fishy story of a female skeleton that was supposedly recovered from the island and then conveniently lost. Now we have an anti-wrinkle cream jar that just might have belonged to her and some upcoming photo work on an old photo that might show the impression of a wheel of the Electra. What people like to call “circumstantial” evidence while reminding us that such evidence can be admissable in court. Yes, but it comes in degrees and this is pretty think circumstantial stuff.

Pretty thin.

The problem remains the same. All efforts to account for her fuel supply put her on fumes at Howland Island about 300 miles away from Gardner. She said she was at Howland and the radio operators said her signal was so strong she had to be very close. She went silent, which most investigators assume meant she went into the drink. The TIGHAR people can’t explain why she didn’t bother to say she was going to fly an additional 300 miles. There were a few post disappearance radio calls, most seem bogus.

I hear a Ballard like expedition is headed to Howland soon and expects to find the Electra in thousands of feet of water near the island. We will see.

UPDATE

A little quick research reminds me that the Phoenix Islands, or which the former Gardner’s Isand is one, were searched in 1937, apparently twice. Evidently, a number of people close to the situation, apparently including legendary pilot Paul Mantz, thought Gardner’s was the second most likely place to look. The Navy flew over it within days of the disappearance and the pilot saw signs of what he called “recent habitation” but his attention to the island drew no response and the Navy evidently did not think there was sufficient evidence to land. Earhart’s husband launched a private search on the heels of the official one and evidently also scoured the Phoenix Group and turned up nothing.

So, it isn’t true to suggest that the Phoenix Islands are a complete chimera, but the essential roadblocks remain. Plus the fact that the islands were searched and nothing came of it.

PS I read in a comment on another site that the anti-freckle cream in question had been off the market for more than one decade when Amelia vanished, making it unlikely that her alleged dislike of freckles prompted her to tote a bottle of the goop along. It doesn’t rule out the possiblility the bottle was “repurposed” but that probably makes it that much more difficult to trace to her. Of course, science is science and it is possible she reused it to carry something that could be traced to her such as a prescription ointment. I will wait for that.

Romney Has Many Opportunities To Highlight Obama Administration Failures…

…and one of those failures is energy policy

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/05/30/romneys-historic-opportunity-low-cost-energy-fuels-economic-recovery/

I hate to say it,but our current leadership is afraid of workable energy and favors only tax payer funded boondoggles that benefit its “green” friends.  Obama/Biden lied outright in 2008 by pretending to go along with the McCain/Palin “all of the above” energy plan. Bills to advance thorium are stalled, conventional nuclear is a dead issue, there is no drilling going on to speak of (certainly no new drilling) and coal is under attack. So we languish and spend $4-$5 for gas in an effort to force their expensive pet projects into profitability.

I hope Romney does hit and hit hard on this and does in fact develop a comprehensive policy that clearly drives us forward.

President Obama Insults Poland???

http://hillbuzz.org/obama-insults-poland-while-honoring-famous-pole-97975

The poor Poles lost millions of people to Nazi/Soviet butchery, including several million Jews.  Now this.

In defense of the president I must say he probably meant to say that the camps were located in Poland. You can say “Polish Death Camps” and mean that. It is, however, imprecise.  But that is the problem. Or one of them. He is frequently imprecise when he isn’t mendacious.

He swings between the two extremes, imprecision and mendacity. But there may actually be a third extreme…I still haven’t quite figured out how he came to refer to his daughters as his sons. Unless he is really so clueless that he isn’t even sure where he was born or who his children are.

Memorial Day Remembrances

http://legalinsurrection.com/2012/05/remembering-lt-roslyn-schulte-buried-on-memorial-day-2009/

Bear with me. I normally attend a Memorial Day service near my home but I was under the weather this morning and had home some other committments. Fortunately, many of my fellow bloggers are taking this day seriously and I can share some of their work with you.

Many Americans have no clue what Memorial Day actually is. I was one for a long time until I “dsicovered” Memorial Day in the wake of 9/11.  That day did change me and I am now even more aware than I was before of the sacrifice many of our fellow countrymen make on our behalf. Not just military personnel but a host of people who do dangerous jobs unflinchingly on our behalf. So I hope we can all temper the pleasure we get from a barbecue on a fine May day with a heartfelt remembrance and thanks for those who have given so much more so willingly.

I am reminded of an anecdote in Stephen Ambrose’s D-Day book where he recounts the heroism of a young lieutenant in one of the parachute divisions. He was waiting to lead his stick out of the transport when he was hit and severely wounded. He could have stayed aboard and aborted the jump, possibly saving his lfe but keeping his stick out of action. Instead, he chose to jump, sacrificing his life to be sure his stick got into action. Ity is important to remember his name, which can be found in Ambrose’s book, but it is also important to remember the thousands of men and women whose names will not be known to us who also have given that “last full meansure” as he did. Their actions were often every bit as brave and self-sacrificing but their names are known but to their God.
